What's the funniest joke in the world?
Written for Mike Kelley & Marlie Mul

The four of us—Aaron, Eloise, Jason, and Monika—share the feeling that there is never enough time for art. Making it, curating it, seeing it. Something always gets in the way: emails, installation, hosting press, scrubbing floors, preparing equipment. The whole carousel of tasks that swing us as far away from the artwork as possible.
So we decided to do the opposite: make time to talk about the work at length. And a text is what came of that. Most of the audience has understood our silence as reflection. A few thought it meant we had nothing to say: ‘I squeak—I don’t speak. Not responsible for the interpretation’, says The Banana Man.
We thank Verschiedene Bilder for giving our collaborative text “What’s the funniest joke in the world?”—written for Mike Kelley & Marlie Mul by Laurenz and Shimmer—a beautiful visual appearance. Come grab one at Laurenz this weekend!

Het Zuid Manifest: I Love Carlos
28. – 30.03.2025
Location: Durum Time, Katendrechtse Lagedijk 365B, Rotterdam
Exhibition: 28. – 30.03.2025
Laurenz is happy to be part of the 1st edition of Het Zuid Manifest: I Love Carlos, an art festival in the Charlois district of Rotterdam, initiated and organised by Rib. During the three days of the festival, 15 unconventional venues, most of which have never been opened for cultural purposes before, including restaurants, shops and cafés, will be transformed into exhibition venues.
In the restaurant Durum Time, Laurenz will present the adapted documentation of the project Grandmotherhood (uncountable) Бабинство (непреброимо), which took place in 2022 in Shabla, Bulgaria, at Baba Vasa's Cellar–an artist-run space in the basement of Lazar Lyutakov's grandmother's house. For the 2022 project, we invited 14 artists and cultural practitioners to contribute to the show by sharing a recipe for a dish or drink that reminded them of their grandmother. The original recipes were displayed in the exhibition space. In addition, a version of the recipes was printed on A3 paper tablecloths, which were placed under each of the dishes we prepared for the opening for visitors to enjoy. By the end of the evening, the tablecloths were stained by food, greasy fingers and the raindrops that had fallen earlier in the evening.
Printed on A4 paper and piled on the tables of Durum Time, the scanned documentation of the Bulgarian summer evening of 16 July 2022, with all 14 recipes, can be taken home by visitors of the festival.
The presented material contains the documentation of works by: Maziar Afrassiabi, Suzanne Bernhardt, Katya Buchatska, Niklas Heiss, Christine Hohenbüchler, Marine Kaiser, Mariana Lanari, Lone Haugaard Madsen, Vasilka Maneva, Bruno Mokross, Ivan Moudov, Ananya Tantuu, Takeshi Yoshida, Anna Zvyagintseva.

We are excited to announce Insights of a Practice, a new format that will unfold across March, April and May. As a pilot, this project seeks to place a focus on the conversations surrounding artistic practice, using the visual language of the works on view as a key pillar to anchor these discussions. At its core, the format invites a richer understanding of the artists' processes, spatial decisions, and the active dialogue between the works, the artists, and the space itself. Through three distinct encounters, driven by six carefully selected artworks, the audience will be invited to engage with the motivations and methods behind the creation of the pieces, rather than just what is immediately visible.

We are delighted to announce Florian Hofer's short residency at Laurenz. Over the course of two weeks, Florian will be working on-site, using Laurenz's new spaces as a studio. In the coming days, the artist will define the framework within which he will share his work with the public.
With this new experimental format, we want to invite artists to help us get to know our new environment. By focusing on the artistic process rather than the presentation of finished works, we aim to create more space for the development of new practices and to explore the exhibition space as a site of production.

baba Vasa’s notes written in Bulgarian:
“I am very happy when they come! They made a gallery out of my basement! I love all of my grandson’s friends, they are very sweet kids! They come from Vienna, from Sofia. When they are here I feel young… my basement - a gallery. They organize concerts, and all the young people from Shabla gather. Musicians come as well, it's great fun! I love them all from the bottom of my heart!”
